Consensus Conference on Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases
– December 2-4, 2005, Bank of Montreal Conference Centre in Toronto, by invitation only
Conference co-chairs:
Dr. Paul R. Fortin, University of Toronto and Dr. Marvin Fritzler, University
of Calgary
Scope:
Lupus is referred to as a systemic autoimmune disease, part of
a family of diseases that include a number of other conditions. While lupus is the
more prevalent one and research in this area is more advanced, the conference organizers
felt that a number of other systemic autoimmune diseases that seriously impact people’s
lives and share common research and clinical challenges, would benefit from being
included in the scope of this Conference. The scope of the Conference will therefore
include: lupus, scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome, autoimmune myositis and vasculitis
(inflammation of blood vessels).
Conference Objectives:
- To bring together a wide
spectrum of stakeholders to help define a vision for Canadian research in Lupus
and other Systemic Autoimmune Diseases
- To create an opportunity for patients to
participate in setting the research agenda. These consumers will help to identify
areas which they feel are relevant to people living with these diseases
- To provide
an opportunity for CIHR Institutes and other research funding agencies such as the
Canadian Arthritis Network and The Arthritis Society to consult with consumers,
national and international researchers and policy makers regarding priority national
research themes that can lead to improved diagnosis, understanding and management
of these diseases
- To educate stakeholders on the scope of current research in Canada
and globally
- To build and strengthen research in those Systemic Autoimmune Disease
areas that do not yet have a strong national presence; this would be done by inviting
research trainees, as well as exposure to senior researchers who are not currently
working in these areas
- To develop the Canadian research agenda in Lupus and Other
Systemic Autoimmune Diseases....
